It's difficult to say what kind of writing passes some kind of universal purity test, so I tend to accept the world of fan works as a place of free expression and personal responsibility. Many people use fics to deal with their own trauma and want to do it through these idols they love and relate to. I mean, for me using real-life tragedies (such as an actual family member's death) as plot points can be distasteful and using real-life struggles crudely makes me side-eye the author, but those things are complicated as well. I can understand RPF being an ethically grey area when it goes to certain extremes, and there are subject matters that can cross a line into distasteful for each individual. Fiction has way less real-world impact than gossip. The former is clearly marked as fiction and no one (except people who already have some kind of problems with delusional ideas) thinks one person's imaginative scenario has any meaningful bearing on reality. To me the context of fanfics is so harmless compared to actual speculative comments even on this subreddit. No one goes into a fic to find something out about that real person.

And it's true that to write a fic you have to be the arbiter of 'how would this member act in this situation' based on your image of them and the kind of roles you have cast them in in the story. I sometimes hear criticism that it 'speculates' on the members too much. That word perhaps describes one of the problems for many people who find it iffy. The fic just requires more characterization.
